PRISM Points

Our periodic series of articles to inform and enlighten clients and friends of PRISM Consulting Group on a variety of human resource issues.  The concepts expressed are universal, regardless of the nature of your business and which products and/or services you market and sell.

PRISM Points #8 (4/15/2004)

How to Attract the Best People

In brief:  Companies with a clearly defined PFE (Purpose for Existing) don't have to look for the best people to work for them;  the best people are attracted to them.  As the economy improves, attracting people rather than recruiting them will become a bigger issue.  MRO Today (1/21/2004)

Employee Theft Can Be Prevented

In brief:  It's hard to believe that a trusted employee might steal but it happens all the time.  Small business owners should have safeguards in place to reduce the potential for employee theft including screening applicants, having more than one person involved in cash transactions, and keeping excellent records.   The Commercial Appeal, Memphis TN (2/9/2004)

Five Ways to Jump Start Your Company's Ethics

In brief:

Shift the company paradigm to the need for responsibility rather than ethics.
Make the company's values more concrete by defining each one.
Good or bad news should be shared throughout the company.
Make it a habit to ask employees:  "What puts this company at risk in the next year (or five)?"
If employees are taking pay cuts or losing their jobs, the CEO should consider taking a pay cut.

Who's Responsible for Hiring Illegal Workers ?

In brief:  The Wal-Mart case points up an ongoing problem for companies who rely on contractors' assurance that their workers are legal.  A company unwittingly can be drawn into a process called "layering," where the contractor or subcontractor hires illegal workers as "independent contractors," holding them responsible for paying their own taxes and insurance.   Forbes.com (11/24/2003)

What's Driving Prescription Drug Costs ?

In brief:  Spending on prescription drugs is one of the biggest contributors to the unrelenting rise in the cost of health care for business.  Critics of rising drug costs are quick to blame pharmaceutical companies' advertising and aggressive sales practices for the problem.  In fact, the real culprit is a third-party reimbursement system that undermines economic incentives to control costs.  strategy+business (9/19/2003)

Update on Proposed Overtime Changes

In brief:  The U.S. House of Representatives has voted 221-203 in support of blocking the Bush administration's proposed changes to the overtime rules for white-collar workers.  While the vote is nonbinding, it raises further doubt about the future of the proposed changes.  The New York Times (10/3/2003)

Adding Value to Your Employee's Suggestions?

In brief:  "Adding Value" to an employee's idea may not work.  When managers "add value" to an employee's idea by suggesting a different or better way to do something, they may think they are just trying to improve on a good suggestion.  However, the slight amount of improvement gained may not be worth losing an employee's commitment to what started out as the employee's own initiative.  Fast Company (August, 2003)

PRISM Points #1 (6/18/2003)

It pays to understand employees' mentality.

In brief:  Entrepreneurs often have trouble understanding when some employees do not feel they have the same stake in the business as the owner does.  A business can be a success when it utilizes those employees who view the business as though it were their own, as well as those who view it as just a job.
